Edvard Munch (1863 - 1944). Munch was avant-garde by being the great predecessor of expressionism; he mainly focused on portraying human emotions, fears and insecurities. The shrill colors, the choice of his subjects and the expressive lines, in particular, had a major influence on the development of expressionism.
